88. John OXENHAM (4)(276) was born about 1787 in Oakford.(277) He died in 1859 in Taunton, Somerset, England. (278) He was a Solicitor.(279) John never seems to have made enough money to keep the family in any great style. In 1841, the 18 year old Emma Jane was keeping house for her father and five brothers with the help of only a 15 year old servant girl. Ten years later things were a little better: only one brother was at home and again they had one servant, an older woman. He was married to Jane GARLAND about 1819. (280)

Jane GARLAND(4)
(281) died about 1835.(282)
Jane may have been John's first cousin, if she was the daughter of Richard
Garland, a brushmaker in Taunton, who was married to Johns mothers
sister, Sarah Leworthy. Jane had wealthy connections. Her aunt, another Jane
Garland, began life as one of nine children of an agricultural labourer from
Tiverton, and became Mrs Moore, the wife of a common soldier serving in India,
but she left her husband for Dr Thomas Philipps, who became Surgeon General of
the East India Company and amassed a fortune.
On returning to England from India, Dr Philipps bought a fine old house and estate
called Aberglasney near Llandilo in Carmarthenshire (during the 1990s the
gardens and the frontage of the house have been restored with lottery money).
In 1813 Dr Philipps was a Sheriff of Carmarthen. He finally married Mrs Moore
in 1823, just months before he died in 1824. Aberglasney then passed to his nephew,
so Mrs Philipps moved to a smaller house called Pentre Parr, and Johns
eldest daughter, Ann, worked for her there. When Mrs Philipps died in 1845 she
left the bulk of her estate to John and Janes children, especially to the
daughters. Children were:

Emma Jane never married and was still at home with her father at the
age of 28. She may have kept house for him into his old age. She had of course
done very nicely out of great-aunt Janes will at the age of 23. She died
aged 61 in Stepney, London, in 1883.

said that one of her husbands brothers took up land on the west coast of
New Zealand and this may have been William.

x.
Herbert OXENHAM(4)
(313). Herbert is described as a gentleman. He is another possible
candidate for the brother who emigrated to New Zealand.
xi.
Mary Catherine (Kate) OXENHAM(4)
(314) was born about 1835.
(315) Mary Catherine was not living at home in the 1841 census, when
she was six, nor in the 1851 census, when she was 16. It is possible that she
was brought up by relatives elsewhere. Her mother had died when she was young
and the house was full of young boys.
Possibly she was brought up in Tunbridge Wells because she married from an address
there in 1856. Thomas and Emma were living in nearby Tonbridge at the time, but
she was not living with them.
