11. Nathaniel PEARCE
(60) was born on 3 Nov 1763.
(61) He died on 22 Dec 1827 in Wellingborough.
(62) He was buried in Church Brampton, Northampton Co..
(63) Nathaniel Pearce [third] (1763-1827) is recorded as living in
the Hall in 1809 and occupying three farms at that time. This is confirmed by
reference to another later map prepared by Thos. Eyre in 1779 (q.v.). This clearly
shows the Hall as the only large building in the Bramptons, except for the Church.
The Chapel (q.v.) had evidently been demolished by that date. This Mr. Pearce
was a keen and progressive farmer, anxious to improve the quality of his cattle.
It is recorded that in 1790 he purchased a bull calf from Mr. Fowles of Rollright,
Warwickshire, for 100 guineas, thereby introducing a better breed of "neat
cattle" into his herd. It appears that he was abundantly compensated for
paying that high price because he later sold a bull calf of only ten days old
for a sum of 40 guineas.
In the churchyard is an imposing table-tomb containing many members of the Pearce
family, including the widow of Nathaniel [second] (died 1798), his sister Elizabeth
(died 1806) and her three children as well as his son Nathaniel [third] (died
1827).
Nathaniel [third] had eight children and again named his firstborn Nathaniel
[fourth]; only two were boys. An unexpected fact is that after such a close
relationship with the parish church over two generations, these children were
all baptized in Castle Hill Chapel, Northampton by the dissenting minister the
Rev. John Horsey between 1790 and 1805. This was the chapel where the Rev. Philip
Doddridge was the minister from 1730 until 1751, in addition to his being the
principal of his Academy for dissenters. Upon his death, the Academy moved to
Daventry b in 1789 under the tutorship of the Rev. John Horsey.
In Lord Spencer's rent book of 1826 reference is made to "the Manor House,
the grounds, formerly 'Hall Close' and three farms, purchased of N. Pearce, Esq.,
occupied by Wm. Rose-Rose, tenant". Although no precise records have been
found showing the date of demolition of the Hall, another piece of evidence is
seen in George Wetton's Guide Book Published in 1849 wherein he observes that
there are no remains of the ancient Manor House of the Dyves to be seen. Nathaniel
Pearce died in Wellingborough on 22nd December 1827, but it is not known when
he left the Hall. The facts point to the probable period when the Hall was knocked
down as between 1809 and 1826.
